Illegal logging is a well-documented issue within the tropical timber trade, and the consequences reach further than most people realise. Rainforests are cleared faster than they can recover, wildlife habitat disappears, and the certification schemes meant to prevent it have real gaps in enforcement. It's not always possible to know exactly what you're buying or how it was sourced.
Specifying locally grown timber is a straightforward way to sidestep that uncertainty entirely.
If you've been chasing Kwila lately, you'll know the story. Lead times are out, stock is thin, prices have moved. Tropical hardwood supply was already under pressure before the current squeeze, and it's not getting easier anytime soon.
Saligna has been sitting right here the whole time.
Eucalyptus Saligna, known in Australia as Sydney Blue Gum, is a genuine hardwood grown right here in New Zealand. Dense, durable, and well suited to decking and cladding. Not a stopgap while Kwila sorts itself out. A timber worth specifying on its own.
It performs like a hardwood because it is one
People specify Kwila because it's hard, tough, and handles outdoor conditions without fuss. Saligna does the same job. It's dense enough for serious decking use, holds fixings well, takes foot traffic, and handles NZ moisture and UV without issue. If supply has pushed you to look for an alternative, you won't feel like you've settled.
No treatment needed
At Hansen, we cut all sapwood out of our Saligna. That means the timber you receive is all heartwood, and heartwood is naturally durable without any chemical treatment at all. No preservatives. No treated pine conversation with your clients. Just clean, solid hardwood that does the job on its own.
NZ Grown and milled in Clevedon
All NZ Grown Saligna sourced from around the country and then we mill it.
Kwila travels thousands of kilometres by ship before it reaches a NZ building site, through a supply chain that's genuinely hard to trace. With Saligna from Hansen, it's the opposite. Short chain, known provenance, stock you can actually get.
What it looks like
Warm reddish-brown tones with a consistent grain. It oils well and overtime will go silver in colour to provide a genuinely stunning timber. Works for outdoor decking and interior cladding. Not identical to Kwila in appearance, but a proper hardwood finish in its own right.

A lot of builders and specifiers are looking seriously at Saligna for the first time right now. Most of them wonder why they hadn't made the switch sooner.
